Odisha sprint trio dazzles in Kazakhstan Natl Meet

Odisha sprint trio of Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda and Amiya Kumar Mallick achieved notable success in the Kazakhstan National Athletics Championships at Almaty yesterday. Dutee and Srabani helped Indian 4x100m women’s relay team create a new National record, clocking 43.42 seconds.

The 4x100m relay quartet, comprising of Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda, H M Jyothi and Merlin Joseph broke their own National record of 44.03 seconds, which they had created in the IAAF World Challenge in Beijing earlier this year in May.

The Indian women relay team, however, settled with the silver medal at the Almaty meet after starting off the blocks through Joseph, who was followed by Jyothi and Nanda respectively with Dutee anchoring the finale leg. Hosts Kazakhstan took the top honours, with a timing of 42.92 seconds. The championship fetched another success for Dutee, who went on the secure silver medal in 200m sprint with a timing of 23:69 secs on July 5.

Meanwhile, the Indian 4x100m men’s relay team, featuring Amiya Mallick, won the gold medal with a timing of 39.90 seconds. The Indian quartet was led by Jyothi Sankar, followed by Krishna Kumar Rane and Vidya Sagar with Amiya Kumar Mallick running the last stretch. The relay teams will now be competing at the third and fourth Indian Grand Prix on July 10 and July 11 respectively.
